A Tyranid ship the size of a moon is lobotomised when an Imperial
cruiser suicide rams its primary brain cluster. The Gargant-class
bioship drifts helplessly through space, its symbiotic organisms
attempting to revive it while lesser organisms run uncontrolled through
its body.
One the thriving hive world of Rivoli, Maquin's Tomb was compromised
ten years ago by an alpha-class telepath named Maquin. Overloaded and
driven insane by fifty billion busy minds, he seized control of the
entire population and drove them to suicide over the course of twelve
hours. Only a few ships in high orbit could protect themselves long
enough to cast themselves into the warp and escape. The mass deaths
distorted the warp surrounding Maquin's Tomb, and the escaping ships
have only recently dropped out of the warp to inform the rest of the
Imperium about what has happened. The industry and science of an entire
hive world lay ripe for anyone who dares to to brave the wrath of an
insane alpha-psyker hiding somewhere in the empty hives.
The huge blue gas giant that is the largest and outermost world in the
Galimatius system is the least useful planet by itself, but what is
much more interesting is the space hulk in a stable orbit around it,
which emerged from warp space two hundred years ago, and appears to be
staying put. Scavengers have been picking over the hulk ever since
emergence, searching for salvageable ship hulls, archaeotech or alien
artifacts. Over time, parts of the hulk have been converted into
functional habitats and even spaceports. The hulk is nominally overseen
by a governor tasked with ensuring that the salvage proceeds in an
orderly, organised manner. In practice, the authorities are quite
thoroughly corrupt, prepared to overlook (for the right price) anything
short of open warfare. The power structure is a web of crime lords and
robber barons, each controlling certain salvage sites or settlements.
Turf wars, claim-jumping and exploitation are facts of life on Blemish.
Located in a backwater section of a backwater sector, Black Atlantis is
a giant Dyson sphere built aeons ago by some ancient xeno race that
then sealed it up for reasons unknown. Later explorers have not been
able to penetrate the single planet-sized pore that blocks all entry,
but colonies were set up to harvest the rare metals and xenotech off
the surface. Thousands of years later, they have penetrated many
kilometres into the surface of the sphere in great labyrinthine
tunnels. Though the xenos have never openly shown themselves, many
claim they still reside within the sphere and punish those who try to
"reclaim" the wrong systems or pieces.
This world in the Heathen Stars is a heavily forested world, with a
mild disposition (in terms of predators and hazards) and climate. Augur
readings indicate low mineral wealth, but a panoply of biological
resources. It is inhabited by a race of green-furred xenos, standing
about one and a half meters tall, that have achieved a stone-age level
of civilization. They have a form of ancestor worship that is eerily
similar to the Imperial Creed, and minor psychic abilities that allow
them limited future-sight in the form of prophetic dreams.
