If the valley had a name, Wazzdog didn’t know it, and he definitely didn’t care in any case. Walled in on the east and west by towering shear-sided mountains, the valley was a long, narrow strip of land covered in arid grass plains and buffeted by arctic winds that raced through the narrow pass. To the north the valley opened out onto the great frozen steppes, and to the south it narrowed and rose into a series of treacherous paths that lead over glaciers and mountains until they descended again, leading out into the warm southern foothills.

The room hummed with the constant drone of small talk, punctuated only be the occasional roar of polite laughter.  John, dressed in a pin-stripe from Saville Row and accented with a light blue silk tie, circulated quietly, nodding greetings to acquainted faces.  The great and the good of the local Conservative association milled and puffed, engaged in the brutal battle of social climbing.

It was a source of constant amazement to him that these people seemed incapable of peace.

John Fastolf sat quietly in the corner of a bustling café and watched with weary wonderment, the folk around him.  Stillness; modesty; calm; tacit comfort; all these things seemed beyond the chill-ruddied faces as they gabbled and bellowed at each other, a stream of inanities to fill the silence.

Even before Valkyrie had completely touched down the men were exiting.  They took up a standard defensive formation around the vehicle.  They were never trained how to be escorts, and since no one said otherwise they did what you always do when exiting an airborne carrier.
